Sarum Hydraulics are the experts on Pressure test and hydrotest pumps.

We will answer some basic questions and quickly detail the pressure test pumps we manufacture.

What is special about Micropac a pressure test and hydrotest pump?

Our pumps offer true multi-fluid application, using poppet and soft seat valves for a long service life and very low leakage. Our equipment is designed and manufactured in the UK and we are proud that our units are serviceable with low cost spares. After 40 years, we are the experts on pressure test pumps.

What is the difference between Pressure test and Hydrotest?

People use both terms. We use them interchangeably.

How do you pressure test and hydrostatic test?

It depends on what you are trying to achieve.

To understand the different types of test. Is it a functional test to show something works, a proof test at elevated pressure, a burst test to see where it ultimately fails or a cycling test to check a part isn’t fatiguing and failing. If you know what you need to achieve, we can help you. Learn about the differences between the different types of testing in our YouTube video.

Why do I need to pressure test?

Engineers need assurance that pressurised components are safe. You don’t want leakage or permanent deformation if that isn’t part of the design intent. You may be testing a prototype to see what, if anything fails, testing 100% or a sample of production parts, testing to recertify hydraulic or pressure components or just carrying out a regular test every day. There are endless possibilities.

Can I do my own pressure and hydrostatic testing?

Yes, you can in most cases provided it is planned, controlled and safe. We can sell you the equipment for most applications and have our own online resources for planning, recording and safety.  Some pressure testing is set out in standards, for example for gas bottles, fire extinguishers and pressure vessels. You may decide to subcontract it out. We don’t get involved in testing on high pressure gas or testing with hazardous fluids.

You can make pressure testing easier. Read our ten tips for easy testing.

What fluid should I use for hydrostatic testing?

For many applications, water is the preferred medium but mineral oil is still widely used. Our equipment is designed to be multi fluid and built to run on water. Water is very low viscosity and causes long term corrosion, so it is demanding. A commercial oil hand pump won’t be designed to work on water. We are fans of water because it is environmentally safe and inexpensive. Swapping from one test fluid to another isn’t particularly easy. “Flushing” has limitations in our experience.

Do you have a sample pressure test procedure and report that I can use?

We have our web resource for risk assessment of pressure testing, writing a pressure test procedure and a sample of a pressure test certificate.

What bits do I need to carry out a hydrostatic test?

We will sell you all the kit. Our Micropac pump, calibrated pressure gauge, hose, fittings, a lock off valve manifold if you want one and a test enclosure if required. After 40 years, we know pressure testing.

What are the safety issues on hydrostatic testing and what should I do about them?

Definitely risk assess your proposed task and equipment. There is a risk of death or injury, so it is a serious matter. Learn more about pressure or hydrostatic test risk assessments in our web resource.

Which Micropac pumps are for pressure testing?

There are a range of pumps for different applications. Talk to us to sort your pressure and hydrostatic test application.

Micropac pumps mounted on our various portable hydraulic reservoirs form lightweight portable pressure testing or hydrotest pump units. These can be carried to the job and stored easily. The reservoirs are available in anodised alloy or 316 stainless steel. Options including calibrated pressure gauges, hoses and fittings are easily added to meet your exact requirement.

Simple carry-around or cart for site or shop. Look at our Micropac MP Pressure Test Pumps for a single speed solution that works out of the box. This is complete with reservoir. Add a hose, fill the reservoir and you are ready to test. There are five models at 100cc/50 bar, 50cc/102 bar, 25cc/207 bar, 12cc/407 bar or 7cc/700 bar. All will operate down to very low pressures of 1 bar or under. The size of your system, the pressure you require, the maximum pressure and the sensitivity will decide which pump is right for you. Portable reservoirs are offered in anodised alloy or 316 stainless, including our two wheel trolley units for safe and secure transit for 20 litre and larger volumes of test fluid. Contact us to discuss your hydrotest application.

If you require a fixed reservoir for your pressure test application, select an MW-A or MW-3 single speed hand pump plus an MR reservoir. They are all interchangeable.

Two speed rapid prefill option. Our Micropac MD series two speed hand pump offers a very compact and durable dual speed solution. The MD pump has a low pressure, high displacement stage for fast prefilling. Pressing the changeover button switches to a high pressure stage that runs up to 450 bar, 700 bar or 1000 bar depending upon the model. Buy the pump alone or order it with a bundled 5 or 12 litre stainless reservoir. Our MR reservoirs fit this pump. We manufacture these units with a 316 stainless body or an anodised alloy.

Fire industry Misting test. Our MP MIST is a special version of the MP unit for the Fire Industry. Pressure testing of commercial and domestic fire mist systems needs a lightweight and rugged hydrostatic test pump and over some years, our MP MIST pump has become the unit of choice for fire professionals.

Air pump speed and integrated manual pump 2 wheel cart. Our Micropac DUO is a unique product with a strong following for both shop and site users. If you have a larger system and want the deskilled operation of an air driven pump as well as a Micropac pump on the same compact trolley, look at our DUO pump. Some users run 100% air driven pump, some prefill on the air driven unit and finish testing with the hand pump. Others just can’t tolerate the risk of finding there is no air supply and they can’t test. The hand pump gives them total assurance.

Programmable pressure testing at low cost. The Micropac PTR-A is a highly cost effective standard programmable pressure test unit. Tell it your test pressure, the number of cycles and any other parameters and it does the job. This catalogue unit was developed to help our customers avoid very high prices for specialist pressure test rigs. Some complex needs require customer rigs. Many can use the PTR-A.

Rugged hydrotest air driven skid. The Micropac PTR-M offers a rugged skid mounted air driven pressure test unit to 700 bar on oil or water. A basic air driven hydrotest pump.
